KUPUNA

Kupuna – the term is the embodiment of natural respect for elders…a practitioner of aloha (love), pono (righteousness) and malama (caring).

The Wai Nui Kupuna outrigger canoe paddling program is a great way for those age 50+ to paddle on Sixteen Mile Creek and Lake Ontario without having to own their own boat.  We use double hull outrigger canoes (also known as OC12s) that are very stable and can accommodate 12 paddlers.  On occasion, when we have coaching staff and other support availability, we include OC6 sessions (outrigger canoe for 6 paddlers) in the Kupuna program.

New and experienced paddlers are welcome during our afternoon program – we provide coaching to help first time paddlers learn the outrigger stroke and assist more seasoned paddlers to improve their technique.  All equipment including paddles, personal flotation devices (PFDs or lifejackets) are provided, or bring your own.

Our aim is to combine love of the water with healthy exercise and companionship. The Kupuna program, with our most stable canoe, is ideal for individuals of all levels of strength and athleticism.  If you desire the more vigorous and challenging OC6 training program on a regular schedule, we recommend you join as part of our Adult programming.
