What We Paddle
Wai Nui members paddle a variety of single and double bladed craft both recreationally and occasionally in competition. Our facilities host a variety of club boats as well as some private boat storage for members, and to a limited degree for the general public.
OC12 Canoes – Our most stable craft have two 6 person hulls joined together providing a secure platform for single bladed paddling both on the river and on lake Ontario. They are used through all our programs from summer camps through to our kapuna program.
OC6 Canoes – These craft use a single six person hull for single bladed paddling balanced by an ama, as originally found in the pacific islands, and are our fastest boats. We have both unlimited and general class boats typically used for longer distance racing or recreationally exploring the lake or river. They are designed to move by the sweat of the paddlers with an added push by harnessing wave energy.
OC2 Canoes – These craft take 2 paddlers in a single sit on hull with an ama on one side for stability using single bladed paddles and have a rudder. They are designed for rougher water but leave the paddlers more damp than OC6 canoes.
OC1 Canoes- These are single paddler craft in a sit on hull with an ama on one side for stability, with rudders like a scaled down OC2.
V1 Canoes – These are single paddler craft with a cockpit without rudders that take more skill to operate.
Paddleboards – We have a variety of recreational and racing paddleboards that are typically more comfortable in calmer waters.
Single Surfskis – We have a variety of single and double paddler surfskis with sit on hulls designed for rougher waters and double bladed wing paddles. We have a variety of hull types from the more recreational and stable to much less stable with more speed.
